Up until this point in the story of Kieron Gillen’s new version of the Young Avengers, we haven’t seen the full team come together yet. We’ve caught up with individual members or pairs doing their superhero thing, but all that is about to change in the next issue.
Thanks to the preview of the upcoming issue from Comic Book Movie, we can see that Wiccan, Hulkling, Kid Loki, Miss America, Hawkeye, and Marvel Boy will all finally come together as a team for the first time in ‘Young Avengers’ #4. Good thing Billy has been texting with Kate during this whole botched spell ordeal because after the last issue, the young heroes certainly need all the help they can get.
In the gallery below, you can see the first five pages of the book, along with a fun variant cover from ‘Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man’ artist and Guinness World Record holder David Lafuente, followed by the description of the issue:
• Kate Bishop finally turns up!
• A lovely day trip to Central Park for a group of cheery youngsters.
• LIES! It’s not lovely as they’re being pursued by bad guys and it’s not a day trip as (er) it’s at night.
• A shameless retcon into Marvel Boy’s history!
My initial reaction to these pages is that Noh-Varr is very awesome. I love that he loves Earth’s music and pop culture. I look forward to seeing more of that sort of thing in upcoming issues.
Next, I really like Jamie McKelvie’s cover with Kate Bishop and Noh-Varr on it. The arrows are reminiscent of David Aja’s work on Matt Fraction’s ‘Hawkeye’, in which Kate is a main character. Gillen has said in interviews and on his blog that he likes to throw little things into his book to remind the readers that we’re in one big shared Marvel Universe, so maybe this cover is an allusion to the style utilized in Clint Barton’s solo series that’s being touted as the surprise hit of the year. Besides the potential symbolism behind it and the hope of a crossover one day, it also looks cool, which is something that this book (and all the Avengers titles really) has had going on for it since the start of Marvel NOW.
Now that the whole team has assembled, I’m really looking forward to seeing what sort of damage this team can do together. I’ll definitely be picking this issue up later this week, so make sure to check out my review when it goes up.
