Spider-Man’s journey as a superhero began when Peter Parker was very young. Though Sam Raimi decided to go a little bit older with his version of the story, Marc Webb took it back to high school where the original origin of the hero placed him. We saw parts of Peter’s high school experience in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, but will we be moving past the hallowed halls of Midtown High School in the sequel? According to The Wall Street Journal, we just might be.
In a report that mostly talks about the tax breaks given to the production by the state of New York, we’ve uncovered some new details about Spidey’s next big screen adventure in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. When they go into detail about where the film is shooting and what sort of sets are built, the article mentions a collegiate environment:
“The set hints at life beyond high school, including a Columbia University dormitory room that appears to be outfitted for female freshman, with sparkly sneakers and film-noir posters.”
Yesterday, we got a look at Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson meeting for the first time. Could it be that one of them, or even both of them, are in college by the time we pick up with our friendly, neighborhood web-slinger again? Maybe the two ladies are meeting when they’re home for a break or something. Or is it possible that the whole gang is in college now, Peter included? Possibly.
Alternatively, if you look at the official synopsis of the film, it mentions that “high school graduation can’t come quickly enough” for Peter Parker. I have a theory that they’re all very close to college, but Gwen, because she’s so smart, graduated early, moved into a dorm, and started taking classes at Columbia. With Gwen at college and Mary Jane in high school, Peter would end up being torn between the two and drama ensues.
My final bit of speculation is that the dorm belongs to Felicity Jones’ character. The rumor going around is that she’ll be playing Felicia Hardy, a burglar known as the Black Cat that also happens to be another one of Spider-Man’s love interests. I think that she attends Columbia along with Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn and Peter meets her while visiting his old friend.
All three theories are very viable scenarios, but who do you think the dorm room belongs to in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
