While not the only villains in the film, we’ve just learned that ‘Aquaman‘ will likely be battling The Trench in his first solo outing. It shouldn’t be too surprising that James Wan included these creatures in the film and even be a bit fishy if he didn’t have a chance to. As a well-known horror director, the idea of using these terrifying underwater monsters must have been too fun for him to pass up.

News came when there was recent talk about Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry having to battle not just Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta and Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus but also “bipedal humanoids with arm, legs, fins, big heads, big eyes and very sharp teeth.”

For those unfamiliar with The Trench, they are a rival underwater kingdom to Atlantis which were introduced in The New 52’s debut issue of ‘Aquaman.’ They were quite important to the “Throne of Atlantis” story arc, and it almost sounds as if shades of that arc might pop up in the film.

Of course, the description could mean a new race and not The Trench, but it seems unlikely that they would skip over such an incredible race of evil. I suspect that their inclusion won’t be completely dealt with in this outing though and that they’ll be back for a full on battle in a future installment if this does well at the box office.

Are you looking forward to ‘Aquaman’? Do you think that including The Trench will be fun for fans or adding too much to a movie that is already going overboard with his enemies? Jump into the deep end of the comments and share your thoughts below!

‘Aquaman’ will be swimming into theaters on December 21st, 2018.
