Science fiction comedy is a tricky thing and it seems like the newest entry in the sci-fi-com genre will be just as mind-bending. Of course, the actors involved in the film make a large part of its success and according to a press release from K5 International, the sci-fi comedy ‘Convention’ has just signed Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Duplass and Jennifer Aniston to star.

As an example of how bizarre this film claims to be, K5 International described it as “a Kaufman-esque journey that puts [Kingsley, Aniston and Mark Duplass] between the worlds of the cardboard box industry and inter-dimensional molecular mayhem.” The Kaufman comparison is in reference to Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter who wrote such mind bending comedies as ‘Being John Malkovich’ (which if you haven’t seen is a must watch film!), ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ and the upcoming ‘Chaos Walking.’ Kaufman, however, didn’t write the screenplay for ‘Convention.’ Instead, it comes from the mind of Christopher Painter who has written for ‘The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,’ ‘Tom and Jerry Tales,’ and ‘Back at the Barnyard’ and ‘She Spies.’

The official synopsis is a little clearer and gives a more audience friendly version about the film than the description given by the production company:

Convention finds mild-mannered Paul and his feisty sister Abby setting out to change the box storage world with Paul’s invention of the 5-sided box. Breaking all the laws of physics with their new product, their fiercest competitors including maniacal box magnate Bobby Schroedinger and Mathematical Construct, an atomic guardian of the natural order of universal mathematical balance, endeavor to stop them securing the deal of their lives – oh, and ripping a giant apocalyptic whole in the fabric of the universe. On discovering the damage he’s causing, Paul must race against time to put the galaxy back in order and save the girl of his dreams.

Duplass (‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ ‘The Mindy Project’) will star as Paul, the bold inventor of the five-sided box while Aniston (‘Friends,’ ‘Wanderlust,’ ‘Horrible Bosses’) will play his “sassy” supportive sister Abby. Kingley has signed on as their rival Bobby Schroedinger (nice little nod to a pioneer in quantum mechanics), a “maniacal box office magnate.”

As someone who can appreciate a good multi-dimensional space time continuum apocalyptic preventing story, I’m really looking forward to this film as well as intrigued with the concept.

While ‘Convention’ has yet to be given a release date, production is slated to begin sometime in the summer.
