Disney may have found their fairy godfather in Kenneth Branagh as the actor/director is currently in talks with the studio to direct their latest live action fairy tale film based on the story ‘Cinderella’.

The studio and fairy tales seem to go hand in hand, so it was no surprise when it was announced that the Mouse House was working on a live action version of the story. Mark Romanek (‘One Hour Photo,’ ‘Locke and Key’) was attached to direct the film until he bowed out last month due to “creative differences.” Apparently Disney was none too happy with the dark take the director had for the film and the two parted ways.

The script of this untitled film was originally written by Aline Brosh McKenna (‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ ‘We Bought a Zoo’) who also pitched the revisionist version of ‘Cinderella’ back in 2010.  The latest draft was reworked by Chris Weitz (‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ ‘The Golden Compass,’ ‘Fantasy Island’ reboot).

While there’s really no information on the premise of this film or what the new twist on the original fairy tale will be, Branagh would seem like a good choice in whatever direction the project may go. He has directed many successful films in many genres including action (‘Jack Ryan’ is due out last this year), historical (‘Henry V’) and sci-fi/fantasy (‘Thor’) throughout in his career

Luckily, it seems that Cate Blanchard is still on board to play the wicked step-mother, Lady Tremaine. As for someone to play the lead role, Disney is still looking for the perfect match with rumors circulating that Saoirse Ronan (‘The Host’), Gabrielle Wilde and Alicia Vikander (‘Anna Karenina’) are on the short list to become Cinderella.

The project is hoped to begin production sometime in the Fall with a release date in 2014.

What do you think? Is the movie world ready for yet another version of ‘Cinderella’ and is Branagh a good choice to take the reins on this film? Let us know in the comments.
