Last month, Guillermo Del Toro announced that his next directorial effort after ‘Pacific Rim’ will be ‘Crimson Peak’. This new project is described as “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story” that will draw inspiration from films such as ‘The Haunting’, ‘The Omen’, ‘The Exorcist’, and ‘The Shining’. Currently, Del Toro and Lucinda Coxon are rewriting the film, but news has broken this week that actors are already in talks for roles in the film.
Last week, Variety revealed that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Gangster Squad’ star Emma Stone was the first to enter talks to star in ‘Crimson Peak’. As of this writing, Stone is still in early negotiations and the deal isn’t complete yet, but the young starlet is expected to sign on.
The second actor to enter talks this week has connections to frequent Del Toro collaborator Ron Perlman via ‘Sons of Anarchy’. According to Variety again, Charlie Hunnam, who plays Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller on the FX biker drama and Raleigh Becket in ‘Pacific Rim’, is in early negotiations to board the film as well. Hunnam must have enjoyed working with the director immensely to work with him on two films in a row.
At this point, plot and character details are completely unknown, so we have no idea who Stone and Hunnam would play, but both are on the rise in Hollywood, making them both strong additions to the cast. All we know is that Del Toro plans “to play with the conventions of the genre [he] know[s] and love[s], and at the same time subvert the old rules” while making this film. However, we’ll have to wait a while to see if he’ll play nice as production is scheduled to begin in February 2014.
Though the details surrounding ‘Crimson Peak’ are murky, what do you think of the potential cast so far? Is it shaping up to be something you’re looking forward to sitting down to watch a few years down the road? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
