While director’s commentaries are now commonplace in DVDs and Blu-rays, it looks like commentaries for trailers are soon becoming a norm. Last week Guillermo del Toro gave his thoughts about the trailer for ‘Pacific Rim,’ and now Joseph Kosinski is doing the same for his sci-fi film ‘Oblivion.’
One of the advantages of having a director’s commentary on movies is that viewers gain knowledge of trivia not normally known by just watching the movie alone. You can find out why a scene was filmed the way it was, a character’s backstory or motivation as to their actions, and even be informed of segments that may have ended on the cutting room floor but would have added to the story. For trailers, commentaries are great as you get a better glimpse and understanding of the film before going into the theaters. This perspective can only enhance the experience while watching the film which this commentary does for ‘Oblivion.’
The video is rather lengthy, logging in at a little over 12½ minutes long but it’s filled with a lot of information. Not only do you get the usual behind the scenes information about the film, Kosinski also gives the backstory of Tom Cruise’s character, Jack, tech specs on some of the set pieces, and even talks about the time period the movie takes place in.
So settle in as you watch the commentary. It is definitely a great companion piece to the awesome trailer that was just released!
