The world premiere of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ took place in New Zealand and while the film won’t be in theaters here in the US for another couple weeks, the first clip from the Tolkien fantasy film has been released.
Amidst the action and the grandeur of how epic the film will be, the clip reminds movie goers that there will also be times of solemnity and earnestness with regards to the gravity of Bilbo’s journey.
The clip is an endearing one and shows Gandalf (Ian McKellen) bestowing a familiar sword to Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) which he later names Sting. For those who saw ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ this is the same sword that Bilbo gifts to Frodo.
Best of all, the clip has Gandalf imparting some of his great wizard wisdom as he tells Bilbo, “True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.”
It’s almost certain that there will be more clips to come, but in the meantime, enjoy this first one!
