It’s been awhile since the last trailer for Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ was released. At July’s Comic-Con, attendees were able to get their first look at the film and today, Disney has unveiled a new longer look of the film which delves deeper into the story and reminds us of what to expect in the Land of Oz.
There are lots of nods to the original MGM film ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ and the first obvious one is the beginning of the trailer where the “real” world is filmed in black and white. Once Oscar Diggs (James Franco) arrives in Oz, the world is full of color and CGI enhancements. The sight of the flying monkeys and the munchkins were enough to bring a smile knowing they will be back, but one thing that is very noticeable, is the lack of reveal of who is the Wicked Witch?
In the first trailer there is a far away shot of the Wicked Witch and a hint on who she is, but this trailer only gives a green hand and her silhouette in the flames. Those with a good memory may recall an interview where one of the actresses who played one of the witches commented on how much fun she had playing the role of the Wicked Witch (hint: it wasn’t Michelle Williams who plays good witch Glinda). I won’t ruin that for you but this angle of marketing was interesting to see.
Overall, the trailer is whimsical and does tempt you to follow Franco on the yellow brick road. Will you be joining?
