Is it any surprise that the film, ‘Man of Steel,’ will be shown in theaters in 3D and IMAX? Possibly – only because it wasn’t filmed in either format. But in a recent press release, Warner Bros. confirmed that the Zack Snyder Superman reboot movie will indeed be shown in theaters not only in 2D, but also in the price gauging 3D and IMAX version.

Granted, this news may be a bit déjà vu as IMAX, at one point in July, had already stated that the film would be shown in this format only to retract the statement from their site with the studio saying that the announcement was premature and that no decision was made official.

Those who know Christopher Nolan (‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy) are well aware of his intense dislike for the 3D process (which is why ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ didn’t utilize that technology) so it’s eye opening that ‘Man of Steel’ is going the 3D post conversion route. However, since he did hand off a lot of his control as executive producer of the film early in the production process, it’s no wonder that the film will now be released in this format.

In the press release, Snyder is quoted as saying:

“The film is going to be a visually exciting experience in all formats: 2D, 3D and IMAX.  Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow ‘Man of Steel’ to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience.  We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”

There are a lot of movie goers who have strong opinions of the whole post-conversion process knowing that many times it is a studios’ way of having the film bring in more money at the box office and the post conversion process leaves much to be desired. After all, if you know you will be releasing the film in 3D wouldn’t it make sense to film a least some of the sequences in that format?

Regardless, movie audiences now have a choice. Are you happy to hear that ‘Man of Steel’ will be released in 3D or would you have preferred they not undergo the post-conversion process? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Man of Steel’ is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe and will be shown in theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX on June 14, 2013.
