It’s been a while since Godzilla terrorized any major cities, but thanks to Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and indie sci-fi director Gareth Edwards, the popular franchise is being brought back to life to wreak havoc once again.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via Blastr), the ‘Monsters’ director revealed his approach to doing a new movie for the giant Japanese-demolishing creature:

“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”

Not only has he been hard at work trying to deliver a more real world version of the iconic movie monster, Edwards has also making sure that Godzilla’s makeover is up to snuff. Here are his comments on just how much work he’s putting into that:

“I’ve never worked this hard, this long and been this emotionally involved in something that’s lasted only a few seconds since the time I lost my virginity! But the reaction has been amazing and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.”

That right there is some serious commitment. Hopefully all of the director’s hard work will pay off when the new Godzilla film with a script from David S. Goyer (‘The Dark Knight’), Max Borenstein (‘The Seventh Son’), and David Callaham (‘The Expendables’) hits theaters on May 16, 2014.
