With filming to begin soon, Sony seemed to have pretty much filled every major role for ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ except for one: Valentine Morgenstern. But it looks like they may have found their man as THR is reporting that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in negotiations to play the character.

You may remember that Meyers was recently cast as Dracula in the NBC straight-to-series show of the same name. He is known mainly from his role as King Henry VIII in Showtime’s ‘The Tudors’  but has also appeared in the films ‘Albert Nobbs’ and ‘Mission Impossible III.’

Without getting too spoilery, Meyers will play “a powerful but insane Shadowhunter looking to make the world pure at any cost.” His character, Valentine, plays a very important part in the film and, if the movie does well at the box office, we’ll be seeing more of him as the studio hopes that ‘City of Bones’ will be the first of a trilogy.

If Meyers does sign on, he will join Lily Collins who leads the cast as Clary, an ordinary Brooklyn teenager who meets the mysteriously tattooed Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) who turns out to be a half-angel warrior known as a Shadowhunter. When Clary finds out her mother Jocelyn (Lena Headey) has been abducted, she desperately hopes Jace will be able to help. Clary is introduced to the world of Downworld filled with werewolves, demons, and other deadly creatures and soon realizes that she, too, is a Shadowhunter and finds herself caught up in an ancient battle of forces she barely understands.

‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ will begin filming in Toronto with Harald Zwart (‘The Karate Kid’) at the helm based on an adaptation written by Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King.

Expect to see the film in theaters on August 23, 2013.
