I want to hate the ‘Robocop’ remake. I really do. I am a huge fan of the original 1987 flick about a cop who is killed and then resurrected as a cyborg law enforcer. My first thought is…. the original is near perfection. Why remake it?

But everytime MGM posts another bit of info or casting, I’m slowly pulled towards the thought that this remake might not be as bad as I would at first suspect. First it was announced that Nick Schenk (‘Gran Torino’) would be writing the film. Next we got Joel Kinnaman (‘The Killing’) as the lead character. Then mere weeks ago, we added Gary frakkin’ Oldman to the cast as the scientist who creates Robocop. And now…

The Hollywood Reporter has just announced that Samuel L. Jackson (yes… Mr. Nick Fury himself) just signed on to the cast! Mr. Jackson will be playing a character called Pat Novak who is described as “a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world.”

‘Robocop’ will be directed by Jose Padilha (‘Elite Squad’) and is planning to begin filming this coming September with a release date sometime in the summer of 2013.
