Universal is breathing a sigh of relief as the box numbers for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is better than originally forecast.

After a disappointing showing for ‘Battleship,’ the studio needed a film that would take them out of the red. Originally, the studio had downplayed their expectations by setting a weekend domestic target in the $38 – $42 million but early indications show that the film may reach the $17 – $19 million mark today alone giving it a weekend box office tally of $48 – $52 million, way above initial expectations.

Although initial midnight screenings for the film only brought in $1.38 million (less than ‘Men in Black III’ which grossed $1.55 million), ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ opened in less theaters making it a better per theater average with almost double the take per theater than ‘MIB3.’

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ looks like the movie that will succeed where other big movies have failed since the release of ‘The Avengers.’ With no other noteworthy releases in store until next week (cough…’Prometheus’…cough cough), the movie may have a chance to earn its keep.
