Back in 1999, kids everywhere finally got to answer the age-old question: Which Nintendo character would win in a fight? For the many years following, kids, teens, and 20-somethings played as their favorite Nintendo characters like Link, Pikachu, Kirby, and, of course, Mario. But the question of superiority in the PlayStation universe still went unanswered… Until now.
Collider is reporting that 13 years after ‘Super Smash Brothers’ was released, Sony PlayStation is finally releasing their own brand-specific character fighting game later this year called ‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’. At an event in Los Angeles, journalists were able to play a demo of the game, which featured six characters: Kratos from ‘God of War’, Sly Cooper, Sweet Tooth from ‘Twisted Metal’, Colonel Radec from ‘Killzone 2’, PaRappa the Rapper, and Fat Princess. There are also support items and level designs from games such as ‘Patapon’, ‘Ratchet and Clank’, ‘Buzz!’, ‘Little Big Planet’, and ‘Wipeout’.
After reading the review from Joystiq, the game is basically ‘Super Smash Brothers’ with PlayStation characters, and it even looks somewhat similar to the game as well, but that’s okay because this is something that fans have wanted for a long time. Check out the first video of game footage, along with some developer comments, below.
We’re almost definitely going to get more info on ‘Battle Royale’ at this year’s E3 convention. Until then, let’s speculate who else will appear in the game. It’s a total no brainer that Crash Bandicoot will be a character. Maybe we’ll see Spyro the Dragon, Jak and Daxter, and Nathan Drake as well. But what of other characters who are synonymous with PlayStation? For example, Snake from ‘Metal Gear Solid’ is a character that immediately comes to mind when one mentions the gaming system, but he’s already in ‘Super Smash’ for Nintendo. I doubt that he could be in both, but maybe Raiden, a ‘Metal Gear’ character who has his own spin-off game coming out soon, will replace him. And if Nintendo can grab a non-Nintendo character like Snake, I’d love for Sony to grab Earthworm Jim. Could you imagine how awesome he’d be in a fighting game?
