The Avengers’ hasn’t even been released yet but Marvel and Disney Studios have already announced the release date for the sequel to ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’. Mark your calendars as “Cap” will return to the big screen on April 4, 2014.

Originally the date had been reserved for an “untitled” Marvel project. It’s being speculated that in order for the sequel to be ready in time for that date, ‘Captain America 2’ will probably start filming in the latter end of 2012 at the earliest.

No director has been named for this project but the current front runners are F. Gary Gray (‘The Italian Job’, ‘The Law Abiding Citizen’), George Nolfi (‘The Adjustment Bureau’, ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’), and the directors from the NBC show ‘Community’ Anthony and Joseph Russo.

Although there has been no official word of the plot of ‘Captain America 2,’ Marvel did provide this log-line as a teaser and a glimpse of what we should expect in the movie:

The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

Oddly, the sequel, which is obviously going to be a big blockbuster, is being released outside the normal heavy movie zone of Thanksgiving/summer season. It should be noted, though, that it will also be released a month before ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ sequel which is scheduled to be in theaters on May 5, 2014. The April release date will allow ‘Captain America 2’ to at least get a jump on the summer movie onslaught.

With this news, we now have the current lineup of movies Marvel Studios plans to release:

•The Avengers on May 4th, 2012
•Iron Man 3 on May 3rd, 2013
•Thor 2 on November 15th, 2013
•Captain America 2 on April 4th 2014
•Untitled Marvel 2 on May 16th 2014

Just out of curiosity, how many think the untitled Marvel 2 movie that is set to be released on May 16, 2014 will be the sequel to ‘The Avengers?’ Hopefully we’ll find out soon! Anyway, I’m very excited to see that ‘Captain America’ will pick up where ‘The Avengers’ leaves off and am already excited! Aren’t you?
