‘Prometheus’ has teamed up with TED Talks, a series of talks and lectures that share technologies and ideas from all over the world via the internet, to give us an excellent piece of viral marketing. In this clip form the Twitter feed of Damon Lindelof, the co-writer of the film, TED brings us a clip from a talk with Peter Weyland of Weyland Industries from the year 2023. The TED Blog has this to say about Weyland:
“Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.”
Weyland, played by Guy Pearce, delivers a chilling and eloquent monologue that gives us a small peek into what we’re going to see in Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi. As Collider points out, this talk takes place a few years before ‘Prometheus’ since Weyland mentions that they’ll have human looking androids soon. The character played by Michael Fassbender will be an android. This talk also sets up the line of thinking that goes into sending the spaceship Prometheus on its journey into space.
To coincide with the release of this TED Talk, a website for Weyland Industries has been launched. On the site, besides a link to the video, there is a blurb about new investing opportunities with the company that would be revealed in a few days. We can expect more viral marketing to emerge on the web at that time, and if it’s anything like the TED Talk, it should be worth checking out.
