For years, fans of the popular TV shows ‘Firefly’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ have been anticipating experiencing their favorite fictional worlds in a different way—an online game. A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) allows players to complete missions together and chat. People have met others with similar interests while playing an MMOG, which is why many were looking forward to the ‘Firefly’ and ‘Buffy’ MMOGs.

However, Multiverse announced that the company ceased operations back in December 2011. Multiverse developed the Multiverse Platform with the goal of supporting the design of virtual and web-based games. Although there was interest in the Multiverse Platform, the company failed to become profitable and had to cease operations because of a lack of funding.

According to Massively, both games were supposed to be powered by the Multiverse Platform. Because of the shutdown of the company, Multiverse had to stop development of the games based on two of Joss Whedon’s beloved properties.

‘Firefly’ fans have a glimmer of hope from DarkCryo Entertainment. DarkCryo is trying to develop ‘Firefly Universe Online,’ but the project is unauthorized. Also, the site is under construction, and the company does not have a release date for the game, so there are many obstacles in the way of FUO becoming a game.
