Eric Martsolf as Booster Gold on 'Smallville'

Syfy has ordered a pilot script based on DC Comics’ time traveling hero Booster Gold. Booster Gold has appeared on other DC television properties in the past including the ‘Justice League’ animated series and ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’. His most recognizable appearance to mainstream audiences was most likely in the final season of the CW’s ‘Smallville’.

The pilot is set to be written by Andrew Kreisberg (‘Fringe’) and executive produced by Greg Berlanti (‘No Ordinary Family’). So what’s it about exactly? According to the Hollywood Reporter:

“The story will center on Booster Gold, a washed-up athlete from the future who travels back to the present in hopes of becoming the greatest super hero of all time. Instead of chasing criminals, however, his main priority is chasing fame and money. But Booster Gold discovers that being a hero takes more than just a megawatt smile, and that the future doesn’t happen without first protecting the present.”

While I’m a big fan of Booster, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to turn the character into his own show being as he’s virtually unknown to anyone outside of the comic book community. I mean… c’mon! This isn’t Superman or Batman… or even Aquaman. This is Booster Gold… the time traveling jock who just can’t get a break.

On second thought… I hope this project does make it to air. Booster could be the breath of fresh air that super hero shows need since he’s not the brooding type. And hey! If the Booster Gold pilot falls through, there’s always Guy Gardner.
