A couple months ago it was announced that Ridley Scott would be directing a new ‘Blade Runner’ film but other than that, not much other news was offered. Now, it looks like this project is moving farther along than first thought as Scott has now given more details about the movie that may be his next project after ‘Prometheus.’

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Scott has revealed that he has been interviewing screenwriters to write the movie that is “liable to be a sequel.” He obviously has spent some time thinking about the film as he continues to say, “I think I’m close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver…we’re quite a long way in, actually.” (Sounds like Scott has already thought out the basic premise of the movie, doesn’t it?)

That’s good news for some as it sounds like it won’t be long before the movie will be in production. Andrew Kosove of Alcon Entertainment (who has the rights to the film) has said that he doesn’t see production to start filming for ‘Blade Runner 2’ before 2013. This would give Scott enough time to finish ‘Prometheus’ (its release date is June 2012) and get all the pre-production preliminaries done.

The one disappointment many fans may have, however, is that this sequel will not feature any of the cast members seen in the first film. Scott has said that this new ‘Blade Runner’ will be moving ahead and “not with the past cast.” When specifically asked about Harrison Ford’s character Deckard and if he would be in the film, Scott replied, “No, not really.”

For the uninitiated, ‘Blade Runner’ is based on the Philip K. Dick novel, ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ and is about Rick Deckard, a burnt-out “Blade Runner” whose job is to track down and destroy rogue superhuman robots called replicants. His life becomes more complicated when he finds himself falling in love with one and struggles to keep her from being destroyed.

It’s easy to see this movie taking place in the same universe as the original ‘Blade Runner’ but with a different cast. Others may wonder if there is really a need for another ‘Blade Runner’ film as the first one is so iconic. The fact that Scott is at the director’s helm should alleviate the fears as he has a great vision on projects that are dear to him and works hard to make sure that vision comes across the big screen.
