The town of ‘Eureka’ may be rolling up it’s sidewalks, but the vision will live on. Bob Brumley, the chief executive officer of Pegasus Global Holdings, said he wants to build a $200 million town on 20 square miles of land that he will call “The Center.” It will be the model of a future city, completely self-sustaining with environmentally friendly technology, according to The Washington Post.

“The idea for The Center was born out of our own company’s challenges in trying to test new and emerging technologies beyond the confines of a sterile lab environment, The Center will allow private companies, not-for-profits, educational institutions and government agencies to test in a unique facility with real world infrastructure, allowing them to better understand the cost and potential limitations of new technologies prior to introduction.”

The Center will resemble a mid-sized American city, including urban canyons, suburban neighborhoods, rural communities, and distant localities. It will offer the only opportunity of its kind to replicate the real-world challenges of upgrading existing city infrastructure to that of a 21st Century smart city, operating within a green economy.

Brumley also stated;

“I am confident this innovative project would provide a great boost to New Mexico’s economy,” Governor Susana Martinez said. “We are pleased to be able to offer the resources, open spaces, and talented workforce required to make this effort a success. My administration is committed to an ongoing relationship with Pegasus that will allow the Center to thrive and create New Mexico jobs.”

Construction of The Center’s test facilities and supporting infrastructure may require as much as 20 square miles of open, unimproved land. It will be designed to represent the current mix of old and new infrastructure found in most modern U.S. cities.

The University of Queensland had plans to build a multi-billion dollar brain city where 4,500 elite scientists can live and conduct research back in 2008. No word on the University’s progress.

This may be of some small comfort to fans of ‘Eureka’, to know that reality is complimenting the ideals set forth by one of history’s favorite scripted television shows. ‘Eureka’, it’s cast, team of writers, and crew will live on in our hearts!
