This morning, Screen Gems released the first official trailer for ‘Underworld: Awakening’. In this fourth ‘Underworld’ film, Kate Beckinsale return as her death dealer character from previous installments. The ‘Awakening’ title is appropriate since the the movie follows Selene as she wakes from a twelve year coma to again do battle with her ancient enemies… the Lycans. Selene teams up with her now 14-year old halfbreed vampire/lycan daughter, to stop BioCom from creating a race of super-Lycans.

In the eternal war between vampires and werewolves, I find myself squarely planted on the side of the wolves. So naturally, a movie where vampires slaughter werewolves using blue-filtered slow-motion kung fu, never enticed me. Even Kate Beckinsale in skin-tight leather couldn’t get me to watch further than the first film in the ‘Underworld’ series. However, if you enjoyed the first three movies, it looks like you’ll get more of the same when ‘Underworld: Awakening’ releases in 3D next year.

As a final word, before ‘Underworld’ fans send me hate mail, I would like to point out that taste is subjective. To wit, I am a fan of the sepia-tinted slow-motion kung fu zombie slaughtering of the ‘Resident Evil’ series so take from that what you will.

‘Underworld: Awakening’, directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, releases in 3D on January 20, 2012 and stars Kate Beckinsale, Charles Dance, and Michael Ealy.
