It’s that time of year again… Father’s Day is right around the corner! Whether you’re buying something for your own dad, or you’re looking to shower your husband, brother or another man in your life with something special, you’re sure to find the perfect gift for your favorite science fiction fan.
Movies:
What better says, “You’re the greatest dad” than giving him a copy of a movie you know he’ll love? There are so many good ones that are in the process of coming out right now, and you’ll want to make sure you check them out to find the best one for him. Does Dad love action films? ‘I Am Number Four’ is currently available, and ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ is coming out the week of June 13th along with ‘Red Riding Hood.’
Television:
There are lots of high quality science fiction shows and buying him a set of his favorite season on DVD could be just what Dad wants. Not sure what show he watches? Here are some hot ones at the moment: ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Ancient Aliens,’ ‘True Blood,’ and more. Maybe Dad’s into retro shows that aren’t airing anymore. If that’s the case, consider ‘Enterprise,’ ‘The 4400,’ ‘Farscape,’ ‘Babylon 5,’ etc. as all great options. Best to check with him to ensure you’re getting something he’s really interested in, though you can’t really go wrong with any of these choices.
Gadgets:
Let’s face it; most guys enjoy gadgets. And while I can’t go into detail listing every gadget out there, there is one that captured my interest.
It’s the Kodak Playsport ZX5. The latest pocket camcorder is perfect for guys who aren’t afraid to play hard. This camcorder captures full 1080p video on dry land or underwater, where it can dive up to 10 feet and live to tell (well, actually “show”) the tale. No more “Ooops, it fell in the water!”
This year’s version sports quite a few really awesome features. It has an anti-glare mode that automatically increases screen visibility under bright sunlight, and a Share button to make sharing easier via e-mail, Facebook, YouTube, and other services.
And let’s face it – the aesthetics are awesome. It literally looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.
The camera is available in five manly colors, and retails for $179.95. However, with a little research you can definitely find it cheaper.
Events:
Does Dad enjoy comic books or events? If you live close to a big city you can always buy him tickets to go to the next Comic Con event. Even if you don’t live close to one, giving him a weekend to check out the sights and sounds of a Comic Con could be just what he wants, especially if it’s in a city he’s always wanted to visit.

Books:
Is Dad an avid reader? There are some truly awesome books that you can buy him that would hold his interest. For instance, ‘Tales from the Edge of Forever’ has received stunning reviews and is gaining momentum among science fiction fans. Also hot right now due to HBO’s airing of ‘Game of Thrones’ is R.R. Martin’s ‘A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book One’ and ‘A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2).’
If he loves the Arthurian legend then you won’t disappoint by giving him the first book in Mary Stewart’s collection titled, ‘The Crystal Cavern.’ She’s written a beautiful trilogy which breathes new life into the legend of King Arthur which is sure to please the most dedicated fan.
