I’m treading lightly, as I reenter the Marvel Universe, so I couldn’t help but pick up, ‘What If Venom… possessed Deadpool? #1’, this week. Now to be 100% clear and honest, Marvel fell from grace for me a couple of years ago when they killed Aunt May, and then immediately retconned about 15 years of Spider-Man to bring an old woman back from the dead. Ever since I have only supported Marvel through their movies (which I wish the fine folks at Warner Bros. would look at and take some notes on how to make a superhero movie (i.e. ‘Kick-Ass’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Captain America’, due out summer 2011)).

What If Venom is written by Rick Remender with pencils by Shawn Moll and the cover by Skottie Young, details what could happen if… IF… Deadpool were possessed by the Symbiote known as Venom. What you get with this story is a decade spanning tale of jheri-curls, member’s only jackets, partying and baby daddies.

Like I said, I’ve been away from Marvel for a while, but I have been keeping a glancing interest in the heroes and stories. This book was a great way for me to wade (no pun intended) back into the Marvel Universe, without having to do a ton of research on backstory. What I got was a fun book, that makes light of Marvel’s love of continuity retconning centered around one of their best and most ridiculous characters: Deadpool.

If you want to have a good laugh, see Deadpool with a bunch of power, an even bigger mouth (if that is possible) and an evil jheri-curl then this is the book for you this week. If you are easily offended, a fan of Tony Stark and hater of Jerry Springer type talk shows, you may be better off skipping this one. Either way I’m happy to be making my way back into the Marvel Universe, one book at a time.

Rating: 7.5/10 (for a good time call Venompool, plus the cover is great!)
