New Mutants'

20th Century Fox will finally release ‘New Mutants’ this year.  The film has been in development since 2014 and was looked at as the kick-off to a new series of films that would diverge from mainstream ‘X-Men’ movies by exploring horror themes.  And one character certainly fits that description well, Magik, a.k.a. Illyana Rasputin, the sister of the X-Man Colossus who was born with mutant teleportation powers, but who was trapped in a Hell-like demon dimension for several years where she learned to manipulate the dark forces.

Anya Taylor-Joy portrays Illyana in ‘New Mutants’, but can currently be seen in ‘Glass’.  While attending the premiere of ‘Glass’, Taylor-Joy spoke to Variety about ‘New Mutants’, calling her character “a bad ass bitch from Hell, and I love her.”  You can watch her interview below:

Taylor-Joy stopped short of calling ‘New Mutants’ a horror movie, but she did say that the “energy was definitely different” while she was making it.

She costars with Blu Hunt (‘The Originals’) who plays Mirage/Danielle Moonstar, who has the power to conjure up images o a person’s greatest fear; Charlie Heaton (‘Stranger Things’) as Cannonball/Sam Guthrie, who can fly and generate powerful energy; Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’) as Wolfsbane/Rahne Sinclair, who can turn into a werewolf-like creature; and Henry Zaga (’13 Reasons Why’) as Sunspot/Roberto DaCosta, who absorbs solar energy and converts it into super strength.  (Note, these are their powers in the comics.  They may be different in the film.)  The film also stars Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes and Antonio Banderas in a mystery role.

Fox has also released a new group photo of the young cast:

Currently, ‘New Mutants’ is expected to hit theaters on August 2, 2019, although it has been plagued with rumors that Fox may actually drop it and send it straight to Hulu.  Check back or updates.
