Joaquin Phoenix Joker

With little official marketing out for DC and Warner Bros. upcoming Joaquin PhoenixJoker‘ film, it is easy to take anything we read with a grain of salt. The latest rumor is based on a report that has shared that some of the material which has found its way online so far was actually intentionally leaked. The goal of these leaks has been to “throw people off” so when the movie comes out audiences don’t really know what to expect.

For those supposedly familiar with what will end up on the screen, terms such as “heartbreaking,“ “pitiful,” and “a tragedy” are being used which aren’t adjectives you would expect for the origin story of one of the most well-known comic book supervillains of all time. The report goes on to say that political commentary will run rampant throughout the film, specifically targeting the current U.S. president.

The film has been described to have a Martin Scorsese-esque tone which may not be surprising since he was rumored to be a producer for the film:

“I’ve heard comparisons made between The Joker and the raw 70s/80s storytelling style of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet. In particular, I keep hearing the film has a very “Taxi Driver meets The King of Comedy” vibe- which may explain why Scorsese was once rumored to be producing the film.”

If this rumored report is accurate, it sounds like the movie we end up seeing barely matches what we know about Joker and what has been hinted at by the promotional material so far.
