Matt Lanter Elaborates On Why The Timeless Team Isn't In The Closing Scene Of The Upcoming Finale

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains SPOILERS for the series finale of ‘Timeless’ so proceed with caution.

Last week, ‘Timeless’ star Abigail Spencer offered fans a tease as to the very end of the upcoming two-hour series finale, by stating “The final, final scene? I’m not in it.  [laughs] The plot thickens. The final, final scene, I’m not in it. So I’ll tell you that.”  It turns out that not only is Spencer’s Lucy Preston not in the closing shot, but according to her costar Matt Lanter, who plays Wyatt Logan, none of the ‘Timeless’ team are present.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Lantner revealed:

“What I think is pretty cool is the end end — the very end — doesn’t end on us. It doesn’t end on the team. It’s larger than us three, or it’s larger than the team, which I think is cool. It’s a little bit of a closed chapter for our characters, but things are left open at the end of this series finale. And our characters are still around, so you never know. There’s always potential to have to save the world again… It symbolizes that what’s going on in the show — time travel — it’s larger than three people.”

So while the main cast isn’t in the final scene, Lanter confirms that all of them– including Rufus (Malcolm Barrett), who was dead at the end of Season 2– are still alive at the end.

While it may be sad that ‘Timeless’ is ending for good, the cast thinks the Clock Watchers will enjoy this final voyage.

Lanter said:

“It’s like a fun reunion. We’ve all graduated and then we had this reunion.  We had a lot of fun the last three weeks. It was cool to wrap it up. It’s something the fans are going to enjoy. We all enjoyed being there.”

Spencer added:

“Because we’ve had a little space and we’ve done other things in between, I realized how grateful I am and how grateful I am for the three of us.  You don’t get this kind of opportunity and this kind of chemistry. We all work differently but we work well together and that’s a really rare combination.”

The ‘Timeless’ finale will air on December 20th, 2018 at 8pm EST on NBC.
