It is hard to imagine that anyone else could embody the role of Star-Lord as Chris Pratt does and Kevin Feige shares that is exactly why Marvel Studios cast the actor in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ in the first place. However, it wasn’t just because Pratt was a good actor by himself that mattered when they cast him but how he could be when sharing the screen with others. Specifically, how he the casting for someone who could potentially work with Robert Downey Jr.‘s take on Tony Stark was a key to their decision.
This tidbit was revealed in ‘Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years‘ where Feige shares that casting for Star-Lord wasn’t just for casting in a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film but more of casting for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve come to see that crossovers are now the norm in Marvel’s films and the idea that Peter Quill would one day meet and work with Tony Stark or another of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has become a staple in the casting decision-making process.
Feige shares that:
“We always cast for the movie we’re making, but we also have an eye on the future. So when we were casting Chris Pratt, we needed the best Star-Lord, but at the same time, we said, ‘We need somebody who one day might go toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr.'”
These two have had to go toe to toe in the comics before so imagining it happening on screen was something that they thankfully felt needed to be factored in. Pratt has been perfect for the role and sharing screen time with both Iron Man and Thor so far. When we did finally get to see these characters interact in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ it felt as if you were seeing them react naturally to one another and you can almost feel how some of these interactions were developed in how the characters have been built up over the years.
Did you imagine when we first met Star-Lord that Chris Pratt had been cast with his character eventually meeting Tony Stark in mind? Are there any other heroes which Star-Lord has yet to meet that you’d love to see him have a chat with? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
