Netflix has ordered an adaptation of John Marrs’ science fiction novel ‘The One’, set five minutes into the future when a DNA test can determine a person’s perfect romantic partner.
‘The One’ was developed for TV and written by Urban Myth’s Howard Overman, who previously created Hulu’s ‘Future Man’ and the British series ‘Dirk Gently’, ‘Vexed’ and ‘Misfits’. He also served as a writer on ‘Merlin’, ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Crazyhead’, which he also produced. Urban Myth Films also produced ‘Atlantis’ and ‘Crazyhead’.
Set five minutes in the future, the series follows events a decade after a scientific breakthrough has allowed people to use DNA testing to find their ideal partner. But even in perfectly matched couples partners have secrets and “The One” follows some that have shocking and deadly consequences, as well as the wider explosive implications of DNA-based pairings.
Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy serve as executive producers. Urban Myth Films is also developing another science fiction project for Netflix, a modern-day adaptation of ‘War of the Worlds’. John Marrs has also penned the novels ‘Welcome to Wherever You Are’, ‘Her Last Move’, ‘When You Disappeared’ and ‘The Good Samaritan’.
Here is the description of the story of Marrs’ original novel:
One simple mouth swab is all it takes. A quick DNA test to find your perfect partner – the one you’re genetically made for.
A decade after scientists discover everyone has a gene they share with just one other person, millions have taken the test, desperate to find true love. Now, five more people meet their Match. But even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking – and deadlier – than others…
Since this project has just been greenlit, there is no word on the rest of the creative team or casting, but check back for more information as it becomes available.
