venomWhile everyone had made it clear that ‘Venom‘ is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is a question that Sony will be getting from here on out and a producer for the film, Matt Tolbach, has opened up about the idea. The fact of the matter is that while Marvel Studios has held firm on this film not being related to the MCU, Sony Pictures and those involved with ‘Venom’ seem to be having a difficult time acknowledging that fact. With the success of everything that Marvel Studios does and how well ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ was received, it makes sense that they wouldn’t want to try and differentiate themselves from Hollywood’s most successful cinematic universe.

So, while Tolmach does share that this wasn’t a movie set to be connected to anything, he doesn’t quite close the door on that idea either:

“The truth is we set out to make a standalone movie. It is a standalone Venom movie. The opportunities are wide open in terms of storytelling, but we made a movie about Eddie Brock and Venom, and it lives in the world of Venom right now. It’s a standalone. But we can do lots of things, and we’ll see where the next story takes this.”

It will be interesting to see what happens next for the film. If ‘Venom’ ends up being a smash hit at the box office, Sony would likely assume that they could replicate that success on their own and try to further keep things separate from Marvel. On the flip side, if it were to fail, it would have Kevin Feige likely less interested in the property and rob Sony of the chance to make further deals with the hit studio on terms that would benefit them.
