Jennifer Beals has joined the cast of DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’ in a recurring role.  Beals will portray the “tough as nails and pragmatic” Sheriff Lucilia Cable of the small town of Marais.  “As the community she has dedicated her life to defending is beset by strange forces, she must double down in her efforts to safeguard everyone she holds dear.”  Lucilia will be the mother of Matt Cable, the high school sweetheart of the show’s lead character Abigail Arcane, played by Crystal Reed.  Earlier reports indicated that Matt would be the sheriff of the town, but either that has changed or was inaccurate.  Also part of the cast is Maria Sten, who plays Abigail’s childhood friend Liz Tremayne, who is now a reporter and bartender.  Abigail works for the CDC and returns to her hometown after a mysterious virus outbreak.

Derek Mears will appear as the Swamp Thing, although it is believed that he will only wear the suit and will not provide the voice.  The role of Alec Holland, his human alter ego, has not been cast.

Beals will also be seen in the upcoming drama ‘After’ based on the science fiction novels by Anna Todd.  She is also part of the cast of NBC’s ‘Taken’.  She will star in and executive produce Showtime’s revival of her former hit series ‘The L Word’ which originally ran from 2004-09.  Of course for many, she will always best be remembered for her iconic role as Alex Owens in the ’80s hit ‘Flashdance’.

‘Swamp Thing’ will be executive produced by James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman.  Verheiden, and Dauberman wrote the pilot with Wiseman set to direct.

DC Universe hasn’t announced a release date for ‘Swamp Thing’ but it is expected to arrive in 2019.
