Netflix

Netflix is not kidding around with its genre offerings as the streaming studio has just announced that they’ll be releasing ‘October Faction’, ‘Warrior Nun’, and ‘The I-Land!’ These three have the potential to be huge properties with a couple of them already having built-in fanbases to help spur viewership. These three are joining the already announced upcoming genre shows ‘The Witcher‘, ‘Wu Assassins’, ‘Locke & Key‘, ‘V-Wars‘, ‘Another Life‘, and a slew of others in various stages of production.

The streaming giant has never been shy about its intentions on creating original content, and this is helping them lock in genre fans from across the globe.

First up is ‘October Faction’ which fans of darker comics will likely be familiar with. This IDW comic series was penned by Steve Niles (’30 Days of Night’) with art by Damien Worm. The series will be produced by IDW Entertainment and High Park Entertainment with Damian Kindler (‘Sleepy Hollow’,’Krypton’) on board as the showrunner and executive producer. While the cast has yet to be revealed, they’ll have a rotating set of directors for this 10-episode run which will include Director X (‘Superfly’,’Mister Tachyon’), Kindler, Megan Follows (‘Reign’,’Anne of Green Gables’), Mina Shum (‘Meditation Park’,’Ninth Floor’), and David Frazee (‘Vikings’,’Orphan Black.). The series will follow “globetrotting monster hunters Fred and Deloris Allen” who along “with their teenage children Geoff and Viv” have to move to upstate New York and find out “that their new small-town setting isn’t as idyllic as it seems.”

Secondly, there is ‘Warrior Nun’ which is inspired by a manga series. This one has Simon Barry (‘Ghost Wars,’ ‘Continuum’) signed on as the showrunner and Executive Producer but outside of the production team not much is known about who will be in front of or behind the camera. In it, we follow a 19-year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue. With a mystical artifact now embedded in her back, she has been tasked with fighting demons that are living on Earth. Only, both Heaven and Hell are trying to find and control her for their own purposes.

Finally, ‘The I-Land’ has Neil LaBute (‘Billy & Billie,’ ‘Van Helsing’) on board as both the showrunner and director of the series with Jonathan Scarfe (‘Van Helsing’) also set to direct. He has much of the cast already finalized including Kate Bosworth (‘Superman Returns,’ ’21’), Natalie Martinez (‘The Crossing,’ ‘Under the Dome’), and Alex Pettyfer (‘Magic Mike,’ ‘Endless Love’) in leading roles. In it, we’ll see ten people waking up on a dangerous island with no memories. They don’t remember who they are, how they got there, and are trying to find a way home. The island is full of “extreme psychological and physical challenges” and have to either better themselves or die.

I’m sure that last one wasn’t at all inspired by ‘Lost.’
