Captain Britain

Put this firmly in the rumor department but a new report has shared that Guy Ritchie (‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’,’King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’) is working on a ‘Captain Britain and the Black Knight’ film for Marvel Studios! Ritchie has a history of working with some of Marvel Studios’ actors such as Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law so could be a smooth transition in some aspects.

Now, the report comes from someone which Ain’t It Cool News understandably wanted to remain anonymous but the site used to have a great track record for scoops so this could very well be our first indication of Britain’s greatest superhero getting a live-action take. The e-mail with the details read as follows:

“Hey there.

I work at various movie studios in the UK and have been situated at Pinewood for a few weeks, and I’m moving to Cardiff on a project soon. I haven’t seen anything about this online anywhere, so I thought id send the info on to you: Space at Pinewood has been booked for November & December 2018 to hold auditions for a Marvel project called CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND THE BLACK KNIGHT. The name of the director booked in for all these dates is GUY RITCHIE. Marvel seems to be moving fast with it to fill in the space left behind by Danny Boyle’s aborted Bond 25. Everyone is excited because it looks like another few months of solid work when we thought we would have to wait a while.

Hope this is of interest like I said I haven’t heard anything about it online, but Marvel is getting in there fast.”

Marvel Studios doesn’t tend to do things fast but there might be a gaping hole in their schedule with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ having been put “on hold indefinitely.” If this was the studio’s plan for the next film to be released, it might have been bumped up in their schedule. As nearly everything past ‘Avengers 4’ is shrouded in mystery, this could very well have been on the agenda even if this isn’t a cosmic character which was rumored to be a primary focus going forward. That being said, there are aspects to him being linked to the multiverse which is something that could play into the MCU.

For those unfamiliar with Captain Britain, his real name is Brian Braddock, and he was given his powers by Merlyn. He is quite the powerful character with a large variety of abilities. He has been given powers in multiple ways over the years, the most popular is the recent explanation where his power levels are tied to his emotions. If he is afraid or unsure of himself we see his powers start to fade. This is a built-in weakness that would help you empathize with the character if done right.

On the flipside, The Black Knight is Dane Whitman and gains his powers from a cursed sword that has been around since the days of King Arthur. While the sword itself corrupts those who use it, Whitman tries to use it for good instead of the evil his family legacy is known for.
