The cast of DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing‘ is growing out of the shadows as Maria Sten (‘Channel Zero,’ ‘Straight Outta Compton’) has just signed on to play Liz Tremayne for the streaming series. The show has been written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman and will follow Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane who is investigating “what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets.”
Sten’s character is “a close childhood friend of Abby Arcane’s, who splits her time between reporting for the local paper and bartending at her aging father’s roadhouse bar. Her no-nonsense attitude belies a deep compassion for her friends and family as she sets out in her uncompromising quest to expose the secrets that threaten her beloved hometown.”
It isn’t clear if we’ll see this quest put her at odds with her friend Arcane as the presence of Swamp Thing is revealed or if the two will be working together for the greater good. Liz was initially introduced as a minor supporting character though she did help Swamp Thing escape from the Sunderland Corporation. Most of her arc throughout the comic series dealt with her being in an extremely abusive relationship with Dr. Dennis Barclay who ends up as an ex-Sunderland employee. The two went into hiding where he goes off the deep end and takes everything out on Liz. At this time Barclay hasn’t been cast so the subplot may or may not appear when the series kicks off.
