John Cho

The ‘Star Trek’ franchise is operating in a state of flux. While rumors about the development of the fourth installment in the current series have been flying, very little has actually been confirmed. Fans looking for more information should refrain from asking John Cho (Sulu) about SJ Clarkson‘s ‘Star Trek 4.’

In a recent interview, he was asked about the next installment and said:

“I know very little about this. I’ve heard we’re going to do one. But beyond that, I don’t have details. I’d rather not know; I don’t want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to decide. If there’s a ‘Star Trek’ phone tree, I’m not aware. We do write long letters to each other.”

While it sounds as if Cho is not interested in being involved in the decision making for any future ‘Trek’ projects, it is safe to say that he is happy with the way the franchise is going. Though ‘Star Trek Beyond’ underperformed when it premiered 2016, Cho made sure explain during the interview that he was unaware that the film underperformed and that he thought it was a “great movie.”

Though unconfirmed, the rumors surrounding ‘Star Trek 4’ have suggested that the film would have a time travel plot and would follow James Kirk (Chris Pine) and his father George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth). The production hit somewhat of a wall following some disputes over contract negotiations of Pine and Hemsworth, but the project will reportedly begin filming next year.

Cho has been involved in the ‘Trek’ universe since 2009. Portraying the role of Sulu, which was made famous by George Takei in the original series in the 1960s, Cho has been an important member of the revamped Enterprise crew. He has been in ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Star Trek Into Darkness,’ and ‘Star Trek Beyond.’
