When the first season of ‘Iron Fist’ arrived on Netflix last year, it was not exactly given the warmest of receptions. In fact, were it not for the disastrous rollout of the first (and ultimately only) season of ‘Inhumans‘ later that year, the show may well have had the dubious honor of being the least-liked installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With that being the case, the show is going into its second season with a lot to prove. Not only does it have to be a good show in its own right, it also has to overcome the stigma of a lackluster first season. The first step in doing that was finding someone to take over for oft-pilloried former showrunner Scott Buck. Enter Raven Metzner. Fortunately, Metzner had some very specific ideas of how to differentiate the second season from the first. And as he explained to Entertainment Weekly, it largely boils down to action and character:
“A couple big things about season two. Number one, if you’re all talking about the action, we really elevated the action. Also, the show goes out into the streets of New York. We shot a lot in Chinatown in downtown New York and this year we’re sort of out there in the world. We evolved all of the characters as well. We’re talking about the relationship between Simone (Missick) and Jess (Henwick)’s characters and we brought people closer in together in a new way.”
Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb seconded Metzner’s interest in further developing the show’s cast, singling out one particular returning character who he expects will make a splash in season two:
“I think the thing people are going to get really excited about was that Sacha (Dhawan) bombed onto the scene as Davos last year and weren’t really sure what side he was on. This year you’ll know exactly what side he’s on and as we revealed last night, somehow, some way he has a fist of his own.”
The second season of ‘Iron Fist’ stars Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Tom Pelphrey, Jessica Stroup, Sacha Dhawan, and Alice Eve. The new season will debut on Netflix on September 7, 2018.
