Inhumans

I feel that the most surprising news here isn’t that ABC has canceled Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’ but that the network is only now announcing it. The show is officially no longer going to be seeing a Sophomore season and that no one was even thrilled for one to happen. The show had barely started to hit its stride in the final couple of episodes. It was really too little too late to not have been able to realize its goals to critics or audiences.

While the initial ratings were passable by the numbers, the actual reception of the series wasn’t that great. It was nearly dead on arrival for the two-episode premiere which was shown in Imax theaters. The screening was only able to bring in $3.5 million at the box office. Of course, there was also a massive lack of advertising for the release in that format, and even those in the audience were surprised that it was the first two episodes of a new show as it hadn’t been explicitly billed that way to casual moviegoers.

Poor marketing wasn’t the only problem with the show though as much like Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist,’ Scott Buck wasn’t able to deliver a well-paced show. This was sad after how many past successes he has had wit shows like ‘Dexter’ and ‘Six Feet Under.’ At least he was able to push past the problems fans had with ‘Iron Fist’ who were watching it for the tie-in to existing franchises. ‘Inhumans,’ however, completely ignored its connections to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that could have brought more eyes onto the series.

Most of the cast and crew have yet to weigh in on the cancellation though likely most saw it coming. The one who has was Mike Moh:

It looks like the tale of the Inhuman Royal Family isn’t one that was meant to be told unless a future season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ addresses their appearance at all.

Are you more surprised that ‘Inhumans’ ended up being canceled or that we’ve only now gotten confirmation about it? Do you hope that they will be brought back in some format or are these a group of characters who can go back into hiding for the betterment of Marvel? Share your thoughts below, True Believers!
