'Black Panther' And 'The Last Jedi' Win Big At The Saturn Awards

Too often, popular movies get snubbed by the major accolades like the Academy Awards, Emmys and Golden Globes.  Luckily, there is the Saturn Awards, given out by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, which also honors genre television accomplishment.  This year marked the 44th annual presentation and trophies were showered on a wide variety of recipients, but like at last week’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, ‘Black Panther’ took home the most awards– five altogether.  The Marvel smash won Best Comic-to-Motion Picture Release, besting ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, ‘Logan’, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Wonder Woman’, as well as Best Supporting Actress in a Film for Danai Guriria‘s portrayal of warrior Okoye, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Production Design for Hannah Beachler and Best Makeup for Joel Harlow and Ken Diaz.

While Chadwick Boseman was favored to take Best Actor, he was bested by Mark Hamill for his final (?) performance as Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’.  Despite some negative fan reaction, ‘The Last Jedi’ was still awarded in the categories of Best Screenplay for Rian Johnson and Best Editing for Bob Ducsay.

Not only was Boseman shut out from Best Actor, but remarkably, ‘Black Panther’ lost Best Costume Design to ‘Beauty and the Beast’.  While it seems that ‘Black Panther’ was the movie to beat, other comic book flicks were recognized as Gal Gadot won Best Actress for ‘Wonder Woman’, Patrick Stewart won Best Supporting Actor for ‘Logan’, and, in what was probably one of the biggest upsets, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ took home Best Special Effects.

Because the Saturn Awards offers prizes in so many categories, the love was also spread to releases like ‘Blade Runner 2049’ for Best Science Fiction Film, ‘The Shape of Water’ for Best Fantasy Film, ‘Get Out’ for Best Horror Film, and perhaps oddest of all, ‘The Greatest Showman’ took home Best Action/Adventure Film.

In the realm of television, “upsets” seems to have been the name of the game.  While ‘The Walking Dead’ predictably won Best Horror TV Series, FOX’s lowly sitcom ‘The Orville’ scored Best Science Fiction TV Series over more obvious examples like ‘The 100’, ‘Colony’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘The Expanse’, ‘Salvation’ and ‘The X-Files’; while ‘Outlander’ took home Best Fantasy TV Series over ‘American Gods’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Good Place’, ‘Knightfall’, ‘The Librarians’ and ‘The Magicians’.

In some areas, it seems the Saturn Awards keeps programming from streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu completely segregated from that from traditional network and cable services, while in others, they are combined.  For instance, CBS All Access’ ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ was nominated for and won Best New Media Television Series, but was not nominated under the standard Best Science Fiction TV Series category.  But Sonequa Martin-Green‘s nomination and win was for Best Actress in a TV Series against stars from traditional network and cable series like Gillian Anderson and Adrianne Palicki for ‘The X-Files’ and ‘The Orville’, respectively, both of which air on FOX.  And because of the wide variety of categories that qualify, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was up for the same award for her role on FX’s ‘Fargo’ a crime drama that technically counts as a “Thriller” but would otherwise not be considered genre.

Likewise, Kyle MacLachlan won for Best Actor on a TV series for Showtime’s ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’, but was up against the likes of Jon Bernthal for Netflix’s ‘The Punisher’ and Jason Isaacs for ‘Star Trek: Discovery’.  But ‘The Punisher’ was not eligible for the standard Best Superhero TV Series.  That was given to ‘The Flash’ over ‘Arrow’, ‘Black Lightning’, ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’, ‘Gotham’, ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘Supergirl’.  While Bernthal didn’t win Best Actor, ‘The Punisher’ won Best New Media Superhero Series.

In special presentations, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum was bestowed the Producers Showcase Award, while the Filmmakers Showcase Award went to Jake Kasdan, whose ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ was the surprise hit of the winter.  Don Mancini was given the Special Achievement Award for creating the ‘Child’s Play’/’Chuckie’ franchise.  The Dan Curtis Legacy Award went to Sarah Schechter, the executive producer of all of The CW’s DC Comics shows, as well as ‘Riverdale’ and DC Universe’s upcoming ‘Titans’.
