The Defenders

When Marvel first announced their slate of Netflix shows – which at the time consisted of ‘Daredevil’, ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Luke Cage’, and ‘Iron Fist’, and has since expanded to include ‘The Punisher’ – perhaps the most exciting part of the announcement was that the individual plotlines of the four shows would eventually culminate in a crossover series, ‘The Defenders’. This, of course, was following the same model established with the then-recent release of ‘The Avengers’. Now that that crossover has come and gone, the big question still remains: “Will there be another?”

The answer, it seems, is “not anytime soon.” Speaking to fans in the course of a Reddit AMA, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb was unsurprising asked whether or not there would be more ‘Defenders’. Loeb’s response was that a second season is “Not in the plans right now, but you never know!” With that being said, it’s worth pointing out that ‘The Defenders’ was always planned as either a one-off (Netflix notably lists it as a “limited series”) or at most an only occasionally recurring affair. It’s also worth noting that while the show’s reception was somewhat mixed, it seems unlikely that it was poor enough for Marvel to change whatever plans they might’ve had for a potential second season. After all, if ‘Iron Fist’ survived its reviews, there’s no reason to assume ‘The Defenders’ couldn’t do the same.

Of course, the simple fact that ‘The Defenders’ isn’t be getting a second season for at least the immediate future doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the Netflix crossovers. We already know, for example, that Iron Fist will be appearing in the second season of ‘Luke Cage’, which will also reportedly feature a reunion between Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.
