It looks like another of George R.R. Martin’s works are getting a cinematic treatment with his 1980 book ‘The Ice Dragon’ being turned into an animated film! Fans of ‘Game of Thrones‘ might not be leaping to check this one out though unless they have kids that they enjoy taking to the movies as this was a children’s book. Warner Bros. is now set to adapt Martin’s first family film to the big screen.

While set in a fantasy world, this isn’t going to be Westeros by any stretch of the imagination. Penned before “A Song of Ice and Fire” was published, this is still a world of warring kingdoms that has dragons. In it, the various realms use dragons to war with one another. The story follows a young girl named Adara who becomes friends with an Ice Dragon. When an army of dragons invades her system, the Ice Dragon is the only one who can help her save both her city and their world.

Dragons of this world are all fire-breathing so the ice dragon is a rarity here. It sounds as if a few of these ideas did end up being repurposed into the world of ‘Game of Thrones.’

Vince Gerardis (‘Game of Thrones’,’Jumper’) is set to be the Executive Producer with Martin also producing. We’ve also learned that Warner Bros. Animation Group chiefs Allison Abbate and Chris Leahy will be making sure things go smoothingly on the studio’s end.

With ‘Nightflyers‘ already in production and multiple ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoffs in the works as well as trying to finish the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, it seems unlikely that Martin will be too heavily involved in this project.
