Valkyrie

SPOILER ALERT: This deals with the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ so if you haven’t seen it yet, you may want to back out… and return after you’ve seen it.

If you’ve seen ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, you might have been left with a few glaring questions.  The opening scene takes place right after the post-credits stinger of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ in which Thor and his fellow Asgardians have fled their dying homeworld only to run into Thanos’ ship.  Tragedy ensues.  Even after the rather abrupt deaths of Thor’s most trusted allies in ‘Ragnarok’, the on-screen deaths in ‘Infinity War’ seemed like pouring salt on the wound.  But there were two glaring omissions– Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (voiced by ‘Ragnarok’ director Taika Waititi).

‘Infinity War’ co-director Joe Russo returned to his alma mater the University of Iowa and let slip some secrets to the attending students (including a certain Reddit user) that have not been revealed to the general public.  Joe Russo, who helmed ‘Infinity War’ with his brother Anthony, revealed that Valkyrie survived the massacre at the start of the film.  The Asagardian ship was equipped with escape pods and that she was sent to oversee the evacuation.

Thompson’s performance as the hard-drinking warrior goddess was a breakout in ‘Ragnarok’ and Thompson has teased that she wants to star in an all-female Marvel superhero movie.  So fans should be pleased to know she didn’t meet the same fate as… well… you know.

Korg also didn’t appear but Russo wasn’t “willing” to discuss this character’s fate.  If it helps, Waititi has stated that he has further plans for this rock creature.  Fans can only assume that Waititi will come up with an escape clause for Korg before the next ‘Thor’ movie, which is all but guaranteed after ‘Ragnarok”s excellent performance at the box office.

Are you glad that these two characters survived the carnage of ‘Infinity War’?
