Benedict Cumberbatch Doctor Strange 2

With Benedict Cumberbatch set to make his third appearance as Doctor Strange (following the character’s eponymous solo film and a cameo in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’) in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, it’s more or less a given that we’ll be seeing more of the Sorcerer Supreme. But when? While the character has certainly been making his share of team-up appearances since his debut, there’s been little word on when we might finally see ‘Doctor Strange 2’.

Interestingly, Cumberbatch himself may be just as much in the dark as the rest of us. Asked by Entertainment Weekly about the plans for his solo sequel (particularly when it might film), the actor gave a surprising response:

“Not at the moment, no. The master plan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate.”

While it’s certainly possible that a ‘Doctor Strange’ sequel has yet to be scheduled, we should also keep in mind that this may just as easily be a matter of what Cumberbatch is allowed to say publicly. After all, if ‘Infinity War’ has made any one thing clear about the Marvel Studios production machinery, it’s that it is a masterwork of juggling actors’ (and directors’, and producers’, etc.) schedules. With that being the case, it’s unthinkable that the studio doesn’t at least have a rough sense of its Phase Four schedule, even as much of their attention (public and otherwise) has undoubtedly been focused

Additionally, with the exception of the ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ sequel and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, Marvel has yet to formally announce any of their post-‘Avengers 4’ projects. Regardless of how firm those plans may be at the moment, they’ll surely have to solidify that schedule sooner rather than later, as we are just shy of a year away from the end of Phase Three (and, if the hype of to be believed, of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it).

Benedict Cumberbatch will next appear as Doctor Strange in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, which marks the culmination of a decade-long effort by Marvel Studios and sees the Avengers team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Thanos. Directed by the Russo brothers from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film counts Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland, Karen Gillan, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olson, Sebastian Stan, and three gentlemen named “Chris” among its gargantuan cast. The long awaited movie is set to arrive in theaters on April 27, 2018.
