riverdale

‘Riverdale’ has been heavy on music since it started, with the inclusion of Josie and the Pussycats and Archie’s burgeoning interest in songwriting.  The CW regularly releases music performed on the show by its stars, but now it’s going all in.  ‘Riverdale’ is following in the footsteps of ‘Buffy‘, ‘The Flash‘ and ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ and doing a musical episode.  And it’s not just any musical, either.  It’s ‘Carrie: The Musical’.  ‘Riverdale’ has been drenched in crime and murder from the start, but things have been upped this season, with the Black Hood storyline.  So a Stephen King-inspired musical should be a perfect fit.

‘Carrie: The Musical’ was written by Lawrence D. Cohen, with lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and music by Michael Gore.  It was first mounted in 1988 but has experienced a resurgence in recent years.  On ‘Riverdale’, the project will be directed by Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) with bombshell Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) in the title role.  Archie (K.J. Apa) will play Tommy Ross with Betty (Lili Reinhart) as Sue Snell, Veronica (Camila Mendes) as Chris Hargenson, Reggie (Charles Melton) as Billy Nolan, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) as The Beak, Josie (Ashleigh Murray) as Miss Gardner and Ethel (Shannon Purser) as Helen.  Midge (Emilija Baranac) appears in the chorus.  For some reason, Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) will appear in the musical as Mrs. White.  Also, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) will appear as Norma.

Since Tommy and Sue are the central romantic couple, this episode may further lead to some romantic interaction between Archie and Betty.  Sorry #bugheads!  (But the show has to go on for years, so nothing can get complacent.)

If you haven’t experienced the music from ‘Riverdale’, check out the awesomest song, a 50s-style cover of Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’.
