guillermo del toro

We all know that Guillermo del Toro‘s take on ‘Justice League Dark‘ fell through as many of his projects tend to do. Now it seems that the famed director will unlikely tackle any other comic property in the near future. For a long period of time, del Toro was attached to a live-action version of ‘Justice League Dark’ and was recently asked during a Reddit Ask Me Anything if he might be willing to return to the project.

His response?

“I am concentrating on other projects right now. Next one could be a big one or a small one. I don’t know. That’s why I am taking time off. To think and ponder.”

That by itself wasn’t an outright no. However, he did focus a bit on how comics were being given the cinematic treatment these days and it hasn’t been in a direction that he enjoys. He used his own work in the medium as an example of how things have changed:

“When we did [Hellboy’s] films (as when Blade II happened) I was doing it because these movies were scarce and -I thought- a rarity. Today it’s different. I am different too. I think my interest lie elsewhere. I still like the big arena films because I essay a great deal of things that come in handy on the smaller films, and its fun to take alternative vacations from each mode of directing.”

Again, that isn’t to say he wouldn’t ever make a comic adaptation again, just that it likely wouldn’t be one of his next projects. As del Toro is also taking a year off from acting and tends to step out of films that he is attached to, I wouldn’t hold my breath on seeing him do one in the next few years.
