Rob Liefeld’s comic book work may be divisive, to say the least, but there’s no questioning that he has created some of the most enduring characters of the past several decades. Over the past several years, his mouthy assassin Deadpool has risen to become one of Marvel’s most popular and heavily merchandised characters. Last year’s R-rated smash movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, only helped to elevate his fame to the masses. Now another of Liefeld’s popular comic creations, Cable, is coming to the big screen, in 2018’s sequel, which is now shooting with Josh Brolin as the mutant cyborg from the future.
Liefeld got the chance to visit the set and meet the embodiment of his creation “in the flesh and blood (and steel coils)” as he gushed on Instagram. The always boyish Liefeld seems especially child-like in his glee over this experience as his caption reads:
CABLE!! Say what?? I’m going to actually meet him in the flesh and blood(and steel coils)?? And, oh, by the way, he’s one of your favorite and one of the most talented actors of all space and time! Yeah, I dare you to try and meet one of your own creations and not get umpteen butterflies in your stomach. I don’t remember anything that was said here besides me thinking “I’m meeting CABLE!! HOW AWESOME IS THIS?!?!” Mr. Josh Brolin could not be more perfect in this role. He is amazing and outstanding and you will no doubt be as giddy as I was when watching him portray Cable. His commitment to becoming Cable goes beyond his physical transformation, he found the voice that fans will go crazy about! Ryan as Deadpool and Josh as Cable. Look out World this is going to be nuts!

Liefeld began drawing the ‘New Mutants’ comic book in the late ’80s and soon found himself tasked with rebooting the team almost from scratch, which involved introducing new characters like Deadpool, Cable, and Domino, who is also featured in ‘Deadpool 2’. The book was soon relaunched as ‘X-Force’ which ran for several successful years.
Cable was eventually revealed to be Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (the clone of Jean Grey) who had been infected with a techno-organic virus and sent to live in the future in order to survive. Cable first appeared in 1990s ‘New Mutants’ #87. A few years ago, 20th Century Fox developed an ‘X-Force’ film that would have included Cable and Domino, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
Liefeld recently exclaimed:
“Oh man, this could not be more exciting for the fans as well as for all the great talent bringing Deadpool 2 to life! Deadpool! Cable! Domino! Colossus! Fans, brace yourself, you have no idea all the awesome that is coming your way! The best news is that June 1 is closer today than it was yesterday!!”
As Liefeld notes, ‘Deadpool 2’ will be released on June 1st, 2018. Are you as excited as he is about this film?
