Venom

It’s been widely reported that Ruben Fleischer’s ‘Venom’ would be based heavily on the 1993 ‘Lethal Protector’ comic book storyline, in which Venom went from being Spider-Man’s splashiest new villain in at least a decade to an antihero on his own right.  It’s also said that the film will be more horror than most comic book adaptations, inspired by the films of John Carpenter (‘The Things’, ‘Halloween’) and David Cronenberg (‘The Fly’, ‘The Dead Zone’).

Besides Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom, it’s not clear what other characters will be included, but it is believed that Cletus Cassidy/Carnage will be the film’s antagonist.  Now we have character descriptions of additional roles from the film.  Keep in mind the names may be fake.

FEMALE PARAMEDIC 20’s, very attractive, physical type. MUST speak fluent Mandarin…CO-STAR

ZIGGY 19, a male guitar player, he is a rocker or punk guy who never stops playing the guitar…CO-STAR

LEWIS DONTAE Male, serious, very physical soldier of fortune. MUST be a stunt performer…CO-STAR

BABY NIGHT 50’s-60’s, former hippie, now homeless. MUST be able to sing…CO-STAR

MRS. CHEN 50’s-60’s, funny, endearing Asian woman who owns the corner store…CO-STAR

Most of these sound like regular supporting roles.  But “Lewis Dontae” is not an existing Marvel character, but there has been talk of soldier of fortune Dominic Fortune appearing in ‘Silver & Black’ another of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs in the works.  Another version of Dominic Fortune was previously used on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ with Delroy Lindo in the role.  But at this point, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ can hardly be considered to be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much less Sony’s output.  In fact ‘Venom’ reportedly won’t even tie directly to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.  It is possible, though not a given, that a different version of Dominic Fortune could appear in ‘Venom’ and ‘Silver & Black’ which would keep these movies from being completely free-standing.

In ‘Lethal Protector’, a group of mercenaries were merged with symbiotes like Venom and became a pack of similar beings.  In the comics, these characters were Donna Diego (who took the name Scream), Carl Mach (Phage), Leslie Gesneria (Agony), Trevor Cole (Riot) and Ramon Hernandez (Lasher).  Mach’s character didn’t initially have an alter ego.  Phage was selected via a fan poll.  At some point, these symbiotes merged into one called Hybrid.

In addition to Hardy, the ‘Venom’ cast includes Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams, who is believed to be playing Anne Weying, Brock’s wife or ex-wife.  The cast currently also includes Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Grace Wan.  Any of these could be part of this gang of mercenaries… or not.

What do you think?  Are you interested in seeing a whole bunch of Venoms in one film?
