In 2009, James Cameron released his latest directorial effort, ‘Avatar’. Thanks in part to the movie’s cutting visual effects and 3D photography, it went on to become the highest grossing film ever. This would be impressive enough by itself, but it becomes even more so when you remember that the previous record holder was Cameron’s own ‘Titanic’.

This success virtually guaranteed a sequel. And now, after nearly a decade of rumors and false starts, production on ‘Avatar 2‘ at last seems to be getting underway. With Cameron preparing to revisit his highest grossing film, it is perhaps appropriate that he do so with one of the stars of his other highest grossing film.

Earlier today, it was announced through Deadline that ‘Titanic’ star Kate Winslet had joined the cast of ‘Avatar 2’. Winslet will be taking on the role of Ronal, a new character to the world of Pandora. Nothing else is known of the character at this time, including whether they are human, Na’vi, or something altogether new.

Cameron had this to say on his reunion with Winslet:

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for twenty years, since our collaboration on ‘Titanic’, which was one of the most rewarding of my career. I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

According to statements made in August, principal photography on ‘Avatar 2’ was due to finally begin last week, on September 25, 2017. Production on three additional ‘Avatar’ films is planned to commence once work on the sequel wraps. ‘Avatar 2’ is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2020.
