Last weekend we saw Fox share release dates for ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘The New Mutants’, and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ but that makes many fans of Remi LeBeau wonder what is happening with the stand alone ‘Gambit‘ movie. As far as we know, Channing Tatum is still on board and excited to play everyone’s favorite Cajun but it’s been a month since we heard “Yeah, it is going to happen” and that “will be ready to go this year and probably shoot next year.” With that in mind, the fact that it wasn’t announced yet shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

In fact, that seems to be exactly what producer Simon Kinberg had assured in March when asked about the film:

“It’s a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year. We have two or three X-Men related movies this year so it can wait for a moment. The process has been that Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds, so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise.”

It still seems that they’ll want to shoot next year which would likely mean a 2019 or 2020 release of the movie. The big news is that it seems they think it will do good enough at the box office to warrant a new franchise akin to what ‘Deadpool’ has done. The reason that this could mean a 2020 release is that 2019 already has a slew of comic book superhero films already set to drop throughout the year and as ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ has shown, there can be overcrowding in the comic book genre.

If they want this to have the best reception as possible and launch a new title, it would have to be released without the kind of competition which could lower box office returns.

Are you glad to hear that the ‘Gambit’ film is still in the works or worried that since it has been in development since 2014 that it seems to be a flop waiting to happen? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
