Joe Manganiello (‘True Blood’,’Spider-Man’) isn’t just an actor and looks to really want to make a ‘Dungeons & Dragons‘ movie. He is a huge fan of the game and actually has gone so far to pitch a film set in the D&D Universe to make this happen.

According to Joe, things might even be moving forward as:

“Last year with a playwright I went to Carnegie Mellon with, I actually made a draft of a film, and now we’re talking to all the right parties. I had a two-day creative summit with the Wizards of the Coast…we had like a two-day summit about where the movie could go or TV series, products, synergy, the whole deal.”

Now, he apparently wants to see the film happen even if he isn’t involved. It almost sounds like Joe wants the movie made so he can watch it just as much as he’d like to be a part of it as with what he’d like to see in it:

“Obviously there’s a spectacle. There’s dragons, breathing fire and lightning. That’s the biggest draw in Game of Thrones…[but] what makes a great fantasy or superhero movie is the human aspect. It’s gotta be about something. We root for those characters in Game of Thrones. Fellowship of the Ring was about friendship and this undying love for your friends and doing anything for your friends, and I think that’s something people can identify with…So I think when a movie is about something human and real emotionally, people are wanna go see it. And then if you get some dragons and breathing fire, I mean, hey, I’m in.”

As good as all of that sounds, we do know that as recently as last year Roy Lee was set to produce a ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ film for Warner Brothers who has had the rights since 2013. Not only that, but they had even attached Ansel Elgort to star in the movie. That doesn’t mean that this won’t happen as Lee wanted to make “a Tolkien-like universe” which would probably emulate the formula which Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has found so successful. To be fair, with all of the various campaigns, stories, and spin-off games there could easily be a shared universe here to be developed, and this might end up as another facet of it.

Warner Brothers haven’t released any details on if Lee’s film is still in pre-production or even canceled at this point, so it is hard to tell what their plans are.
