Squirrel-Girl

Not only has Freeform just announced that ‘New Warriors‘ will be joining ‘Cloak & Dagger’ on their network but that fan-favorite Squirrel Girl will be part of the lineup! It looks like Kevin Biegel (‘Scrubs,”Cougar Town’) is finalizing negotiations to not just pen the series but be the showrunner on “Marvel’s first live-action scripted comedy.” As Marvel had originally wanted to insist that “everything is connected,” this will allow for Freeform to at least branch into some crossover territory with ‘Cloak & Dagger’ and the two shows could quite likely run into each other in their second seasons.

The network has ordered 10-episodes for the first season which was the same sweet spot that they found for ‘Cloak & Dagger’ with each episode set to clock in at 30-minutes. This series is expected to launch in 2018, but as casting hasn’t kicked off yet, it would be hard to presume that to be the case at this time.

In ‘New Warriors’ we will see six super powered heroes who live and work together to try and make the world a better place.

We know that the series is planned to follow:

“Marvel’s New Warriors” is about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world… Even if the world isn’t ready. Not quite super, not yet heroes, “Marvel’s New Warriors” is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once — except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

The series will feature fan-favorite “Squirrel Girl” (Doreen Green) as a totally empowering fan girl—tough, optimistic and a natural leader. Doreen is confident and has the powers of a squirrel… She’s acrobatic, can fight and talk to other squirrels. Her most important trait is that she has faith in people and teaches them to believe in themselves. Additional cast to be announced.

At this time it is unclear as to which other five superheroes will be involved in the series. Chances are we could see Robbie Baldwin making an appearance as Speedball who was the most lighthearted member of the team for years. Nova would make a great character if not tied to the MCU while Hummingbird and Scarlet Spider also would if their rights weren’t likely tied up with Sony. Vance Astrovik’s Justice might be a possible character if they work out a deal with Fox so that his powers aren’t from being a mutant.

According to Karey Burke, EVP, Programming & Development, Freeform:

Freeform’s mission is to deliver incredible content to young adults, and Marvel Television seamlessly aligns with that mission–we couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with them on ‘Marvel’s New Warriors.

Marvel’s Head of Television and Executive Producer Jeph Loeb added:

’Marvel’s New Warriors’ have always been fan favorites, and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience, we’ve had with Freeform on ‘Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’ we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.

I’m at the very least glad to see that we’ll have some crossover potential here. I wonder though as to how the comedic approach will work as the book had just as many serious moments as it did entertaining ones. Also, a very dark chapter in the ‘New Warriors’ book is what lead to the comic version of the “Civil War” into happening in the first place.
